Article Source BS : It’s time to splurge on sport — at least for some! The gala T20 cricket tournament Indian Premier League 2019 (IPL 2019) may still be months away, but time has come for the bids and counter-bids as 351 players go under the hammer on Tuesday. IPL franchises would be cometing to get the best possible combination at today’s IPL auction.

The player salary cap has been increased this year to Rs 800 million from Rs 660 million last season, giving the eight franchises a window to spend some more without worrying about the limit.

The auction would be a one-day affair, unlike the previous auction that went on for days. In another change from the usual, Richard Madley would not be the auctioneer this year and we will see a new face donning the role.

The 351 cricketers in the auction will be split into three groups — batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders.

The teams have already provided the list of retained and released players. The teams, however, can have 25 players in the squad, compared with 27 earlier. The teams can now have eight overseas players, against nine earlier, and they need to keep at least 18 players in the squad.

The teams also have the option of ‘Right To Match’ (RTM) to keep their players. A franchise can retain its players during the auction by matching the highest bid made by another franchise. Teams can only use a maximum of three RTMs, irrespective of the number of players they managed to retain in the lists submitted to the BCCI.

Here’s a look at the list of players retained and released by the teams

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

CSK has a salary cap of Rs 840 million, with the slot for 2 Indian players only. They have retained most of their players and released just three — Mark Wood, Kanishk Seth and Kshitiz Sharma.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)

KXIP have retained only nine of their 20 players and released big names, including Yuvraj Singh, Aaron Finch and Axar Patel. With a total of 15 available slots — 11 for Indians and 4 overseas players — KXIP have Rs 362 million and they would look to make the most of this purse from the auction. KXIP have also traded Marcus Stoinis for Mandeep Singh with RCB…. Read More

IPL win: Dhoni says fitness counts, not age, of CSK’s 30-plus brigade

Shane Watson’s sensational knock ensured CSK chased down a challenging 179 with ease in the final match of IPL 2018.

Chennai Super Kings’ fairy tale comeback is a proof that fitness matter more than age, said skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni  after guiding his team to a third IPL title.

At the auction, CSK were criticised for picking up nine players in their 30s including Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu, who eventually were instrumental in the team’s triumph.

“We talked a lot about age but what matters is the fitness. Rayudu, for example, is 32, he’s someone who is fit, covers a lot of ground. Even if he plays a few games where he spends a lot of time on the ground and in the field, he never complains. So it is the fitness that really matters more than the age aspect,” said the 36-year-old Dhoni after the crushing win over SRH.

“What captains want is players who move well in the field. It doesn’t matter which year a player is born in, whether you are 19 or 20 – you have to be agile. You have to accept your shortcomings.

“For example, if I push Watson to stop a single, there is a very good chance that he’ll burst his hamstring and won’t be available for the next game. So what you tell yourselves is that they have to commit and try, but there’s no point getting injured for a single,” said Dhoni before adding the CSK squad will be heading to Chennai tomorrow for further celebrations.

Watson’s sensational knock ensured CSK chased down a challenging 179 with ease. It was a memorable tournament for the 36-year-old Australian, who ended with 555 runs including two centuries and as many half centuries.

“It’s been a special season, to be honest. To get a special season especially after the last season with RCB. It means a lot to be with a franchise like CSK. After those first ten balls I was only hoping to catch up to at least a run-a-ball,” said Watson.

In the 46th match of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, Chennai Super Kings won the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad and remained in the second spot in the VIVO IPL points table.

Rayudu continued his top form and smashed a brilliant century that enabled the team to reach the target of 180 runs. The usual formidable bowling attack from Hyderabad looked pale today and much of that goes to the wicket condition.

Despite the win, there was no change in the position of the teams on the VIVO  IPL points table.

Chennai Super Kings had won the toss and elected to field first against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Chennai bowlers kept trying but the partnership between Dhawan and Williamson kept going strong. Dhawan also made his fifty.

Jadeja, Watson and Bravo were on the attack yet, a wicket looked far-flung dream for Chennai. Dhawan fell and Williamson followed in the next ball but only after making his fifty. SRH made 179/4 after their 20 overs.

In Hyderabad’s reply, Ambati Rayudu  and Shane Watson opened the batting for Chennai. The two had a firm start and they did not allow any dismissal while Hyderabad bowlers were longing for a wicket.

The duo kept pushing the ball for a boundary and continuous hitting enabled the team to peak in early in the game where the target was big and against a strong team.

In the 33rd match of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, Kolkata tasted victory at home as youngster Shubhman Gill shined with the bat and scored his maiden half century. With the win, KKR move to third position in the VIVO IPL points table. Gill contributed with a significant knock that sealed the victory for the host side. The bowlers did not get much help from the pitch but still, wickets fell at regular intervals for both sides. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the toss and asked Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to bat first at the Eden Gardens.

Shane Watson and Faf Du Plessis opened for CSK and the batsmen did not face much resistance from the bowlers. Soon, there came a turn as Faf Du Plessis was trapped under experienced leg-spinner Piyush Chawla’s googly. It was a smooth sailing for Chennai during the major portion of their batting. Chennai crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over and Kuldeep yadav got the better of Raina in the same over. Sunil Narine struck a blow to Chennai by removing in-form Ambati Rayudu at a cheaper score this time. Dhoni swung into action and kept sending the ball into the crowd, during the process he got a lifeline too as he was dropped in the 18th over. Chennai put up a target of 178 runs.

Chasing a target of 178 runs, Kolkata Knight Riders openers Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn came to bat and Lungi Ngidi got an early breakthrough as Lynn walked back towards pavilion in the first over. Robin Uthappa replaced Lynn, Narine got two consecutive lifelines, courtesy below-par efforts from Ravindra Jadeja who dropped him twice in the second over. After Narine, Shubhman Gill and Rinku Singh kept the fight alive for a brief. Gill continued scoring runs for the team and made his fifty, Karthik gave him company and contributed 45 runs.
